A breathable membrane on the cold side of the construction allows water vapor to pass through but blocks rain and wind. It protects the insulation and prevents moisture accumulation.

Moisture that — for example, via diffusion or small leaks — does get into the insulation must be able to escape. The breathable membrane allows this but simultaneously blocks wind-driven rain.
