Isolatie en energie

Warmteverlies

Heat loss in a home occurs through conduction (through building components), ventilation (desired), infiltration (drafts/gaps), and radiation. With a poorly insulated dormer or loft, the loss from these interventions is disproportionately large.

Types of heat loss

TypeExplanation
ConductionHeat through constructions; determined by R-values (Rc) and U-values.
VentilationIntentional air exchange; determined by the ventilation rate.
InfiltrationUnwanted airflow through gaps.
RadiationEspecially relevant for large glass surfaces and cold surfaces.

A loft conversion or work on a dormer affects several of these items simultaneously: better insulation, better draft proofing, and controlled ventilation.
