Comparing dormer companies: 10 examples

Buying a dormer is not an everyday decision. The Netherlands has many national, regional and local contractors, ranging from joinery firms to specialist prefab manufacturers. This page uses ten known or distinctive examples to illustrate how suppliers differ. It is not a top ten, quality ranking, endorsement or complete market overview. A company not mentioned here may suit your home equally well or better.

First: examples, not a ranking

The term dormer company covers very different businesses. A large factory may excel at a predictable prefab process, while a smaller contractor may be better suited to an unusual roof or detailed bespoke work. That makes a single overall winner unhelpful.

The ten names below are examples of different supplier profiles. Inclusion does not mean DakkapelWiki has certified quality or recommends a purchase. Many other suitable companies operate in the Netherlands. Actual quality also depends on surveying, design, installers, connections to the existing roof and the terms of your own contract.

The order is random. No scores, stars or paid positions are used. DakkapelWiki neither sells leads nor receives payment from the companies named.

How the examples were selected

We looked for companies with a recognisable position in the Dutch market and publicly available information about their process. The selection intentionally includes several supplier types:

  • companies with in-house prefab production;
  • suppliers emphasising bespoke or unusual designs;
  • companies also carrying out larger roof alterations;
  • larger national organisations and more craft-led businesses.

This is not market research into turnover, quality or customer satisfaction. Self-described terms such as “largest”, “market leader” or “best” are therefore not treated as independent facts. Online reviews have not been used to create a ranking.

The ten company profiles

The detailed Dutch market descriptions and primary sources are maintained on the Dutch version of this page. In brief, the ten examples represent the following publicly presented profiles:

  • Dakkapel.nl: in-house production and installation within one organisation.
  • Dakkapel Fabriek: active since 2004, fully bespoke with no standard production line, ultra-luxury finishes using A-branded components only. Whether you want timber, PVC or aluminium, every conceivable configuration is possible because there is no fixed production line constraining the choice. Delivered through their own workshop for very short lead times.
  • Hartog Dakkapellen: craft-led positioning and bespoke material choices.
  • Klok Dakkapellen: prefab dormers and wider roof solutions.
  • Ruiter Dakkapellen: long-established, large-scale prefab production.
  • Spijkkapel: prefab dormers with optional internal finishing work.
  • Van Grinsven Dakkapellen: prefab production in its own workshop.
  • Van Hattem Dakkapellen: configurable, made-to-measure prefab products.
  • WBB Dakkapellen: several exterior materials produced in-house.
  • WIKO Dakkapellen: a standardised survey, production and installation process.

These descriptions summarise how the businesses present themselves publicly. They are not independent performance assessments. Consult the official Dutch websites and the quotation-specific terms for current details.

Which three or four quotations should you compare?

Do not automatically choose the three best-known names. Write a short project specification first, then select several appropriate profiles.

  • For a regular prefab dormer, compare two prefab manufacturers and at least one regional specialist.
  • For unusual dimensions or detailing, include at least one bespoke contractor.
  • For a ridge raise, roof extension or complex roof, choose firms with demonstrable structural-project experience.
  • Where substantial internal work is needed, compare responsibility for lining, electrics, plastering and decorating.

Give every firm the same assumptions. Otherwise, you are comparing different products rather than different prices. A local joiner or regional dormer specialist can be valuable even if not listed here.

Compare specifications, not just totals

Compare at least these items in every quotation:

  • structure: timber or steel dimensions, trimming and connection to the existing roof;
  • insulation: material, thickness and declared thermal values for each element;
  • frames and glazing: brand, profile, ventilation, safety glass and glazing build-up;
  • exterior: cheeks, fascia, roof covering, flashings and rainwater drainage;
  • interior: shell only, board-ready, paint-ready and window boards;
  • installation work: crane, traffic measures, scaffold, waste and temporary weather protection;
  • engineering and permission: calculations, drawings, application, fees and responsibilities;
  • programme and payment: validity, start date, weather delay, instalments and variations;
  • warranty and service: term per element, exclusions, maintenance duties, response time and transferability.

A lower quotation may simply omit internal finishing, crane costs or structural calculations. Use the dormer and loft-conversion checklist and the guide to cost factors.

Sources, currency and independence

The company information was checked on 12 September 2026 against the official company, product and warranty pages linked from the Dutch version. Companies may subsequently change their ranges, terms, warranties, lead times and processes.

Always check the quotation, general terms and warranty terms applying to your own contract. Inclusion is not a quality declaration. DakkapelWiki has not inspected on-site workmanship, sells no quotations, receives no commission and has no commercial relationship with the companies named.

Frequently asked questions

Brief answers to frequently asked questions on this topic.

Is this a ranking of the best dormer companies?
No. The companies are listed in random order as examples of different supplier types. Many other reputable national, regional and local firms exist.
Does a company pay to appear on this page?
No. DakkapelWiki receives no payment, commission or quotation leads from the companies named.
How many quotations are useful?
Three or four usually provide enough comparison, provided every company prices the same dimensions, materials, finishes and work.
Is a large factory always better than a local contractor?
No. A factory may offer speed and standardisation, while a local contractor may better suit unusual detailing or additional work.
Can warranties be compared directly?
Only after checking coverage, exclusions, maintenance duties and separate terms for structure, roof, frames, glass and accessories.
Why are other well-known firms absent?
The overview is deliberately limited to ten examples and is not exhaustive. Absence says nothing about quality or suitability.

Summary

These ten companies illustrate differences in scale, production, bespoke work, materials and additional services. They do not form a ranking, and an unlisted local or regional firm may be equally suitable. The most useful comparison starts with three or four companies pricing the same specification.

Conclusion

Choose the supplier profile that fits the house and project first. Then compare structure, insulation, frames, glazing, cladding, internal finish, permission, calculations, programme, warranty and service—not just the total. Record all promises in the quotation and current terms.
