Dakkapel en zoldergebruik
The choice to install a dormer is closely linked to the function one wants to give to the loft. A bedroom, home office, or bathroom each sets its own requirements for headroom, daylight, and ventilation.

A bedroom in the loft requires an escape route, sufficient daylight, and purge ventilation. A dormer with an operable window meets all these requirements and also provides space for a bed against the vertical facade.
Home office or study
For a workspace, an upright window at working height is ideal. The vertical dormer facade provides space for a desk with a view. Acoustics and sun protection deserve attention, especially on the sunny side.
Bathroom
A bathroom in the loft with a dormer can be ventilated more easily via an operable window. However, the structure must be tailored to the extra moisture load, with attention to vapor barrier foil and connecting waterproofing.
Storage space
When used only as storage space, a dormer is not always necessary. The choice then mostly depends on future use: a current storage room often becomes a playroom or bedroom later on.
