Waarvoor dient een dakkapel?
A dormer is installed for four interrelated reasons: more headroom, more daylight, more usable floor space, and better ventilation options on a loft floor. These functions go hand in hand and reinforce each other.

Under a pitched roof, headroom is limited to a strip around the ridge. By installing a dormer, the headroom is extended across an additional part of the floor, which makes the difference between an unusable loft corner and a functional living space.
Daylight and view
A skylight lets light in, but is located in the pitched plane. A dormer is vertical and thus functions as a normal window: looking out horizontally, opening and closing in an upright position, and accommodating curtains or sun protection according to the same principles as a regular window frame.
Usable floor space
Dutch building regulations use a minimum height of 1,5 m as a boundary to count floor area as usable floor space. A dormer often brings a larger strip above this boundary, increasing the formal living area of the home.
Ventilation
Vertical dormer windows can have a tilt position at the top and a turn function on the side. This allows for targeted purge ventilation, something that is only achievable to a more limited extent with just a skylight.
