Dakkapellen algemeen
Onderdelen van een dakkapel
A dormer consists of several fixed components that together form one structural whole. Knowing these components is essential for reading technical descriptions, building plans, and specifications.

| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Sleeper beams | Longitudinal timbers that distribute the load of the dormer onto the existing roof structure. |
| Front facade / window frame | Vertical, often largely glazed facade with turn and/or tilt windows. |
| Side cheeks | Vertical side surfaces forming the transition between the dormer roof and the existing roof plane. |
| Small roof | Small flat or slightly pitched roof above the dormer, fitted with waterproof roofing material. |
| Fascia board | Vertical edge along the roof, hiding the construction and roofing from view. |
| Roof trim | Aluminum or plastic edge profile sealing the roofing at the edge. |
| Lead flashing | Connecting strips between the dormer and roof tiles that make the whole watertight. |
| Insulation package | Continuous thermal envelope around the roof, side cheeks, and front facade. |
| Interior finish | Finishing trim with sheet material, vapor barrier foil, and a top layer. |
Continuous insulation envelope
Although the components each have their own function, the insulation forms one continuous layer that must not be interrupted. Every interruption — at the front facade, side cheeks, or roof — becomes a potential thermal bridge or damp spot.
