Making a roof opening is the structural intervention where a hole is cut into an existing roof plane for a dormer, skylight, or roof penetration. The intervention affects waterproofing, insulation, and the load-bearing structure all at once.

Sequence

  1. Measuring and marking out the opening on the roof plane.
  2. Removing roof tiles, tile battens, counter battens, and possibly roof boarding.
  3. Sawing through rafters or purlins at the correct height.
  4. Installing the trimmer construction and sleepers.
  5. Applying waterproof and windproof connections before closing.
