A trimmer construction encloses an opening in a floor or roof plane and supports the interrupted beams. With dormers and skylights, the trimmer construction is the heart of the structural modification.

With a dormer, several rafters or purlins are interrupted to make room for the extension. The load of those interrupted beams is supported by a trimmer joist, which in turn transfers the load to adjacent, complete beams or walls.
