A purlin roof is a roof structure where horizontal beams — purlins — form the main load-bearing direction. Rafters or roof boarding rest on these purlins, followed by roof tiles and insulation.

In a purlin roof, the visible main direction runs horizontally: the purlins are the large beams at a fixed height. When a dormer is built into this type of roof, the purlins are interrupted on site and supported via a trimmer construction.
