The extra weight of a roof extension — dead weight, snow, wind, live load — must be transferred via load-bearing walls, floors, and ultimately the foundation. With older houses, the load-bearing capacity is not always sufficient.
Preliminary investigation
A roof extension begins with a structural investigation: recording the existing situation, checking available drawings, possibly a foundation investigation, and always a structural calculation for the new situation.
