Wat is een dakopbouw?
A roof extension is a vertical extension of an existing roof, changing the main shape or ridge height of the roof. Unlike a dormer, a roof extension does not leave the existing roof plane intact, but adds a new building volume to it.

With a dormer, the original roof shape — ridge, slope, and roof planes — remains recognisably present. With a roof extension, (a part of) the original roof plane disappears and a new section of the house is added on top. The intervention is therefore larger, structurally, visually, and legally.
Application
A roof extension is often used when a dormer does not provide enough space, for example with a low ridge or a narrow building. A full extra floor is usually not possible, but an upgraded loft floor with full standing height over a much larger floor area is.
