Dakkapel en daglicht
Daylight is one of the main reasons for installing a dormer. A dormer not only changes the amount of daylight but also the direction from which it enters the loft. This impacts the atmosphere, orientation, and sense of space.

A skylight lets light in from above. This provides an exceptionally even daylight in the center of the room, but makes the view and the transition to the outside limited. A dormer lets light in horizontally, similar to a normal window in a facade. This creates more of a living room-like daylight.
Amount of daylight
Per square meter of glass area, a skylight lets in more daylight than a vertical window in a dormer. In practice, this difference is partially compensated by the fact that dormers often have a proportionally large glass area. The choice between a skylight and a dormer is therefore rarely just about the quantity of light, but mainly about the nature of the light and the usability of the space.
Orientation
A north-facing dormer provides cool, even light without direct sun. A south-facing dormer yields lots of sun, making overheating a focus point. With east and west orientations, early or low-angled sunlight plays a role.
