Natural ventilation utilizes wind and temperature differences to move air through a building. In older, drafty homes, it partly works automatically; in modern airtight homes, it requires conscious design.

Fresh air enters via grilles or opened windows on one side of the home and exits the home via openings on another side or via a higher point. With dormers and skylights, the height difference creates a natural chimney effect.
