Knee walls are the short vertical walls under a pitched roof. They define the usable part of the loft and simultaneously form the separation between the heated space and the unheated roof storage.

Knee walls are often placed at a height around 1.1 to 1.3 m. Lower makes the space behind the knee wall more spacious, higher makes the usable part larger but reduces the view and daylight at the bottom of the roof.
